I began this work by painting a “landscape doodle” as described in Japanese Landscape #1. I finished the painting with yellow sky, hills, and reflected water; then, added koi from a photograph taken in Encinitas in 2017.
This painting began with five “landscape doodles” and other figures from my saved doodle pages as detailed in Japanese Landscape #1. Behind, I created a landscape with large rocks, a single tree and a waterfall with pool. The landscape was finished with golden hills, mountains and sky. I love the zen nature of this painting.
I began this Japanese Landscape in a much more disorganised fashion. Five “landscape doodles” and flying figures and clouds as described in Japanese Landscape #1. Bottom right are flowers from photographs around my neighborhood. Rocks, ledges and golden hills form a border for the koi pond (koi photographed at the Portland Japanese Gardens in 2023). One of the landscape doodles becomes a waterfall into the pond, a fun painting to do.
This painting was based on several, about six, photographs taken a couple summers ago in August 2024 at the Portland Japanese Garden. This garden overlooks Portland and contains beautiful trees, rocks, zen gardens, koi ponds, waterfalls and arched bridge. It was a wonderful August day in Oregon!
In 2016 I began a painting “Homage à Matisse”. I painted two Matisse Cut-Outs and decided the canvas was too small to continue. With the abandoned canvas I incorporated three “doodle landscapes” drawn while performing my job as Produce Signmaker at Whole Foods. These “landscapes” were done daily to get the ink flowing in my pens and ended up with a whole box of them. I finished the painting with water, hills, tree, sky and figures first used in “In The Basque”. The foundation of the Japanese Landscapes had begun.
