In 2016 I began a painting “Homage à Matisse”. I painted two Matisse Cut-Outs and decided the canvas was too small to continue. With the abandoned canvas I incorporated three “doodle landscapes” drawn while performing my job as Produce Signmaker at Whole Foods. These “landscapes” were done daily to get the ink flowing in my pens and ended up with a whole box of them. I finished the painting with water, hills, tree, sky and figures first used in “In The Basque”. The foundation of the Japanese Landscapes had begun.
